Chapter 32: Seven Candles
Daisy turned four on a Saturday, and her father was in the kitchen by six in the morning.
He had been up since four, and he was making pancakes.
They were shaped like horses, or he said they were.
"That one's a cow," Daisy said from her chair.
"It's a palomino."
"It has a tail like a rope."
"Then it's a cow," he said, and gave it to himself.
I leaned in the doorway with my coffee and watched him scrape the next one off the pan with his tongue between his teeth.
He had been home for supper almost every night for a year.
He'd missed two, and both times he had called me from the road at four o'clock to say so, and told Daisy why.
The first had been a breech calf, and the second a flat tire on the interstate.
She had asked him how big the tire was.
He had said the biggest in Montana, and she had believed him.
The house filled up by noon.
The widow came first, in a new straw hat, with a pie and a bag of sugar cookies shaped like ponies.
The foreman came in his clean shirt and stood by the porch rail with his arms folded, grunting at anybody who spoke to him, which was how I knew he was happy.
Jesse's mother brought a card with a check in it and said it was for Daisy's college, and not to tell anyone.
The diner owner brought folding chairs and a coffee urn.
I had baked the cake myself, badly, and nobody said a word.
Dean's truck came up the drive at one.
He had put on fifteen pounds in a year.
He had a regular job on the Tillman crew, and he had fixed the Odom roof in September.
He climbed out and went around to the passenger side, and Birdie jumped down before he could reach the handle.
