Chapter 14: Don't Be Noble

Jesse slid out from under Nate's arms and stood up.

"No," he said.

"Jess."

"You don't get to say that into my hair and expect me to nod."

Nate lowered his hands. "I'm not saying it to hurt you."

"I know that. It's worse."

Jesse walked to the window and back.

His heart was going hard, and his eyes stung, and he was angry in a way he had never been at Nate before.

"Ten minutes ago I told Cal it was your choice," he said. "I meant it. So here's my answer to your choice."

"Okay."

"Don't be noble."

Nate blinked. "What?"

"You heard Cal and you decided to be the guy who sacrifices himself, so nobody has to feel guilty."

"That isn't it."

"Then what is it?"

"It's the trials, Jesse! It's everything I worked for!"

"You gave it up in January with your eyes open!"

"I gave it up because I didn't think I'd lose both," Nate shouted, and then stopped.

The kitchen rang with it.

Nate put a hand over his mouth.

"Both?" Jesse said.

Nate lowered his hand slowly.

"I didn't think I'd lose it and you still be four hours of road away from me," he said.

"I thought if I came here, I'd at least see you.
