Chapter 24: A Year On
A year to the day after I walked the dock in a yellow dress, I stood at the end of it in a green one and waited to be asked.
The ice house had a new roof.
The east wall was poured fresh and not yet stained.
Odette had painted a sign above the door in red letters: DEVEREAUX DOCK, SINCE 1985.
Every shrimper on the bayou had tied up to it that morning.
Eighty-odd people crowded the planks, which were new from end to end.
The fryers smoked in the lot.
The zydeco was on the old speaker.
Somebody's baby slept in a cooler lid in the shade.
The cousin's boy, seven now and barefoot, ran past with a hush puppy in each fist.
I wore my father's ring on a chain at my neck.
It sat warm against my breastbone, where I could find it with my hand.
Odette stood by the ice house door with her tongs and her silver braid and her one daily cigarette, unlit, behind her ear.
She winked at me.
I had been told to wait.
"Just stay there," she'd said that morning. "Don't help."
At seven, when the light went gold on the water, the music stopped.
Lucius walked down the length of the dock.
