Chapter 29: Day Plus One Hundred
On Tuesday morning Clara wanted to know if a biopsy was the same as a harvest.
"Sort of," I said. "They take a tiny bit from your hip. Like they took from mine."
"Will it look like ketchup?"
"Probably."
"Can I see it?"
"No."
"Boo."
The procedure room was on the second floor of the clinic, not the seventh.
A different hallway. Different chairs. The same smell.
She lay on the bed in her fox pajamas.
Her crown sat on the pillow beside her, because they wouldn't let her wear it under the sedation.
"Hold this," she told the nurse, and gave her the crown.
The nurse held it like it was made of glass.
Clara's doctor came in with his coffee.
He looked at me, and I could see he hadn't slept much either.
"Ready?"
"No," I said.
"Me neither," Clara said. "Do it anyway."
She told the anesthesiologist one joke as the medicine went in.
"Why did the cookie go to the doctor?"
"Why?"
"Because it felt..."
She was asleep before the end.
"Crummy," the anesthesiologist said quietly, to nobody.
They sent me out to the hallway.
Brad was sitting in a plastic chair outside the double doors.
He'd asked me on Sunday if he could come.
I'd said the hallway.
He'd said the hallway was fine.
He had a paper cup of coffee he wasn't drinking and the cat book on his knee.
"In case she wants it after," he said.
I sat down two chairs away from him.
Neither of us said anything for a while.
A nurse went by. A man with a mop.
"I listed the house," Brad said.
I looked at him.
"Last week. The agent says it'll go fast. Half is yours." He turned the cup in his hands. "I don't want to live there. I keep looking at the guest room."
