Chapter 21: Help Me

I didn't sit down right away.

I stood behind my chair and looked at him.

The lobby was half full already. Four Greaves tenants on the stairs with their leases. Opal coming out of 2B with a tray of sandwiches.

She saw who was in the chair and stopped dead.

"Oh, my," Opal said. "Look what the cat dragged."

Royce didn't even look at her.

"Ms. Kimball, please. Five minutes."

I sat down.

Malphas came out of the elevator and stood behind me without a word. The big one lay down across my feet.

Royce reached into his coat with a shaking hand and put a sheet of paper on the cherry tablecloth.

It was thick, cream-colored, old-looking. One page.

"That's from my contract with him," he said. "The guarantor page. I took it out of my safe this morning. I want you to see it's real."

"I know it's real. I watched him say it."

"Then you know what happens to me on the twenty-first."

"Yes."

"So stop," he said. "Stop reading them. Every one you burn, I lose more. I'll be dead before Christmas."

The tenants on the stairs had gone very quiet.

"You want me to stop freeing people," I said, "so you don't have to pay for them."

"I want you to be reasonable."
