Chapter 4: Ninety Days

Santino carried my suitcases into my father's hall himself, and Nino kept a gun on him the whole way.

"Put it down, Nino," I said.

"He's a Balestra."

"So was my husband."

Nino lowered the gun a few inches and kept his finger where it was.

Santino stood in the living room under my father's portrait and looked at the table where seven men had given me their hands the night before.

"He sat you at the end of his table for three years," he said. "Under his mother's elbow."

"You sat at the wall."

"I did."

"You watched him call me crazy at his own dinner, and you stood at the back and said nothing."

Santino did not look away.

"Yes."

"Why should I let you stay in this house?"

"Because the yard is mine," he said. "Not his. My father left it to me, and Dario's been trying to buy me out for six years. Forty-one dock crews work the gate at Port Newark. Every container Dario ships goes through my gate."

Nino finally put the gun in his coat.

"Why are you telling her this?"

Santino glanced at him and then back at me.

"Because Dario put his brother on a loading dock and his wife in a back pew," he said. "Last night she took seven captains out of his dining room. I want to know what she does next."

"What do you want for it?"

"The Sartori vote at the table. When the captains meet, your seven vote the way I ask."
