Chapter 13: The Colombo Table
Gemma's father was already awake when she came down the stairs.
He sat behind his desk in a dressing gown, with a cold cup of coffee in front of him. The guards had woken him.
Old Colombo had run his family for thirty years. He looked at his daughter's bare feet and the phone pressed to her chest.
"Papa," she said. "I have to tell you something. Please don't stop me."
"Sit."
"I can't."
She laid the phone on the desk. Her hand left a wet print on the glass.
Then she told him, badly at first, and out of order.
She told him about the test, and whose idea it was. She told him about the year she had spent at the Duranti table.
I stood behind her chair and listened to her say it all in a small voice.
When she finished, her father did not shout.
He picked up the phone and set it down again, very gently.
"Eighteen," he said.
"I said blanks, Papa."
"You said blanks, and you never counted the boxes."
She had nothing to say to that.
He looked at the clock on the wall.
"By noon the heads of the other three families will be in my dining room," he said. "Alessio Duranti will be there too. Go and wash your face."
"Papa, please."
"You will say it again. Every word, to every one of them."
By noon the long table in his dining room was full.
The heads of three families sat along one side with their sons behind them. Alessio sat at the far end, in the same black suit he had worn to the funeral.
