Chapter 6: The Pantry Key

Alessio's POV

I was still holding Mina's bear when the Colombo car came up the drive.

It stopped in front of the steps, and Gemma got out in a white coat with her hair brushed.

She walked up to the open doors and saw the hall.

She stopped.

"Is it over?" she said, before she looked at any of us. "Did they break?"

Tullio's gun was out before I understood that he had moved.

He crossed the floor in three steps and put the barrel against her forehead.

"You told me one bad night," he said. "Now eighteen people are dead."

Gemma went white to the lips, but she did not step back.

"You all said yes," she said. "Every one of you."

"Tell me how that is a game."

"I told you the world wanted to see what the Duranti women were made of. You said let them see it. You, Tullio. You, Alessio. The boys said yes before I finished asking."

She looked straight at me.

"Say I am lying."

I could not say it.

I had sat at that dinner table and toasted her idea with a full glass.

"And you said blanks," Tullio said. "You swore to me they would be blanks."

"They were blanks. I paid for blanks."

"Then why is my wife on the floor?"
