Chapter 10: Her Pier

The underboss already had his hand inside his sweater.

"Don't," I said.

"There's six of them."

"And it's dark, and it's fog, and nobody would see a thing." I kept my voice under the hiss of the water. "That's how they like it. That's how they did my father."

I backed us off on the current, slow, without a sound from the engine, until the pier was a smudge in the white.

Then I called my husband.

He picked up on the first ring.

"Where are you?"

"Off St. George. Varrones are unloading crates onto my pier from a boat with no lights."

He didn't ask me if I was sure.

"I'm coming."

"Don't come now. Come at six."

A pause.

"Why six?"

"Because at six the day shift walks onto that pier," I said. "Forty dockworkers who knew my father. I want them to see it."

We tied up at the ferry terminal's spare float and waited in the fog with the engine off.

The dark boat left at four.

The van didn't.

Two Varrone men stayed behind on folding chairs at the land end, smoking.

The crates were stacked in my father's old pier shed behind them, with a new padlock on the door.

At ten to six, the fog started to thin.

At six, the day shift came down the street in twos and threes with coffee cups and lunch coolers.

They stopped when they saw the padlock.

Then they saw me coming up the pier in Papa's pea coat.

Behind me, three black cars pulled up along the waterfront and parked in a row.

Ettore got out of the first one.

His men got out of the others.

There were twelve of them, and they didn't hurry, and they didn't need to.

The two Varrone men stood up from their folding chairs.

"Morning," I said. "You're on my pier."

"Don Cosimo's pier," the bigger one said. "It's held in trust."

"The seat is held in trust. The pier is mine." I looked past him at the shed. "Is that my father's padlock?"
