Chapter 4: The Crane
I drove my own car to the port, a nine-year-old Corolla with a cracked taillight.
I wore scrubs under my coat and carried my trauma bag on the passenger seat.
At the gate, a guard in a yellow vest looked at the car and then at my face.
"Mrs. Santelli?"
"I'm bringing the Don his lunch," I said.
He waved me through without a question.
That was how I learned that being the Don's wife opened gates.
The yard was a flat gray field of stacked containers, with ships' horns somewhere out on the water.
I parked behind a blue container two rows from the end, and I saw them from there.
A folding table stood under a white canopy at the edge of the quay.
Tommaso sat at the head of it in a gray suit, with his hands folded.
Gaspare stood behind Cesare's chair, and two captains stood at the ends of the table, and a thin man I didn't know held a stack of paper down against the wind.
Cesare sat in the middle of them with a pen.
Behind them all, a hundred yards up, a red crane stood against the white sky with a small dark cab at the top.
My heart hit my ribs.
The cook had said the man on the crane.
I got out of the car and started to walk, quickly, with the bag banging against my hip.
Tommaso was reading the paper aloud.
His voice was warm and slow, the voice of a man reading a bedtime story.
When he reached the last page he slid it across the table and tapped the line at the bottom.
Cesare uncapped the pen.
He didn't look up at the crane.
He was watching Tommaso's mouth, the way he always did.
