Chapter 10: Inspection

Dai Kun had brought forty men, three trucks and a speech.

Bai Jin watched them from the sniper walk, with the whole of Fuyuan lined up on the wall behind him.

Three hundred and eighty people stood on the ramp and the roofs and the gate trucks.

The speaker stood at the front with her brass whistle on a cord.

"Boss Bai!" Dai Kun called up, through a speaking trumpet. "The Director is a reasonable man!"

"He's a thief," muttered the boy.

"Quiet," said Bai Jin.

"He asks for one thing. An inspection of your Warehouse C, by a committee of four."

"Two of ours, two of yours." Dai Kun turned so the wall could hear him.

"If it holds what you say, the Director will accept your slips and sign a peace. If it does not..."

He let the pause run.

"Then the Stadium will take custody of this building, for the protection of the people in it."

A sound went along the wall.

It was a small, nervous sound, and Bai Jin knew it well.

The pencil had told Qi what to ask.

Qi did not want to fight.

He wanted three hundred and eighty people to hear the question in the open, with no way to answer it.

Bai Jin's mouth was dry and his hands were behind his back, where nobody could see them.

"Boss," said Gong Ting, at his shoulder. He spoke very low. "Twelve rifles in the truck beds. Thirty with sticks. Look at their faces."
