Chapter 12: Command
By the rule on the wall, the sergeant outranked the owner as long as the gate was under fire.
Bai Jin had written the rule himself and he had never once thought of this.
"Boss," said Gong Ting, in the doorway of the office, with the rifle already on his shoulder. "You're with me."
"I'm going to the Floor. The committee needs..."
"Under fire, my word," said Gong Ting.
"The south wall isn't the gate."
"It's the only wall that matters tonight." Gong Ting uncoiled a length of green climbing rope from his shoulder. "Hand."
"I beg your pardon?"
"Give me your hand, Boss."
Bai Jin gave it.
Gong Ting looped the rope round his wrist twice, knotted it, and tied the other end to his own belt.
The knot was neat.
The rope was six feet long, and Bai Jin looked at it with deep distrust.
"You've lost your mind," said Bai Jin.
"You're my cargo."
"I am your employer!"
"Cargo doesn't give orders," said Gong Ting. "Come on."
They went down the stairs at a run.
The whole building was awake.
Guards on the roofs, residents with buckets on the landings, the doctor's door open on a lamp and a row of cots.
On the Floor, The speaker blew her whistle at the children and drove them toward the freezer rooms.
