Chapter 16: The Shoebox
Bai Jin went to the gate hut for a clean shirt and found a shoebox instead.
Gong Ting was still in the infirmary under the doctor's eye.
The hut was empty, the stove cold, the bed made with a precision the army had left in him.
Bai Jin only wanted a shirt.
He knelt to look under the camp bed for the sergeant's kit bag, and a cardboard shoebox slid out against his knee.
It had a rubber band round it.
He should not have opened it.
He opened it.
The box was full of paper.
Slips, hundreds of them, folded flat in bundles of fifty, each bundle tied with string.
He knew the paper.
He knew the red chop, and the notch in the corner of every stamp.
He took out a bundle and turned it in the light.
The first slip was dated eight months ago, Gong Ting's first week.
The last was from yesterday.
Bai Jin sat down on the floor with the box in his lap and began to count.
He could not help it.
He counted as he had counted for three years, lips moving.
It came to twelve hundred and six.
Twelve hundred and six slips.
He did the arithmetic in his head and went cold.
