Chapter 22: The Shutters
They came up Taiping Road at first light, and they did not hurry.
Bai Jin watched from the sniper walk with a mug of tea in both hands.
He could not tell where the crowd began.
It filled the road from wall to wall, men and women and children, old people on carts, boys carrying smaller boys.
Nobody had a gun.
They had sacks on their backs and handcarts and wheelbarrows, and every sack was white.
"Six hundred and four," said the boy, at his elbow, notebook open. "I counted twice. Boss Bai, I could count them again..."
"Don't," said Bai Jin.
"Don't count?"
"Don't tell me the number."
The boy stared at him, and slowly smiled.
At the head of the line walked a heavy man in a leather vest with no armband.
He carried a sack on each shoulder, and he stopped at the foot of the ramp and set them down.
It was Dai Kun.
He looked up at the wall.
His eyes were red and he had not shaved, and the old swagger was gone out of him altogether.
"Boss Bai," he said.
"Dai Kun."
"The Director's on the roof of the north stand. He's got a dozen men and a pistol."
He wiped his face with his sleeve.
