Chapter 24: Two Chops
Old Luo printed the first slip himself, at ten in the morning, on the Floor, in front of everyone.
He had set up a card table by the empty checkout lanes.
On it lay an ink pad, a stack of receipt paper and the little block of stone.
Six hundred and eighty people stood round it.
The speaker sat at one end with the committee's seal, which she had had cut that week.
"One egg," said Luo, to the crowd. "Backed by one egg. Not by a story."
His hands shook.
He pressed the stone down once, lifted it, and there in red on the paper were two chops side by side.
Bai Jin and Gong.
The old man held up the slip.
"This is the first," he said. "I'll keep the count."
"Mr. Luo," said Bai Jin.
"Boss."
"You asked me to open C because you were afraid for these people. I think that was the bravest thing in the building."
Luo's mouth worked.
"It was also a betrayal."
"Yes," said Bai Jin. "Both."
"You'll keep the books under the committee's eye, in the open. And you'll weigh the rice every morning on my father's kilo."
"Gladly," said Luo.
"Not gladly. Correctly."
Luo laughed, and wiped his glasses on his cardigan.
