Chapter 14: The Apology

Greta crossed the dance floor on her cane, and the crowd opened for her.

She took the page out of Blair's raised hand.

"Dear, you've folded it badly," she said. "Let's see the bottom."

She smoothed the creased paper flat against her cardigan and held it up to the chandelier.

Across the lower third, in red ink, someone had stamped:

REJECTED.

"The Montana clerk returned this to Harlan on the thirty-first of May," Greta said, to the room.

"I had a copy sent to my lawyer."

"A bride by proxy must be signed for by her own parent."

"Miss Tiffany's mother is dead, and Harlan Hagedorn is not her father."

Blair opened her mouth, and nothing came out of it.

"So he went home," Greta said, "and signed the daughter he could legally sell."

She turned and looked at my father.

"I paid you two million three hundred thousand dollars."

"I paid for the child of the woman who pulled my husband out of Lake Minnetonka."

"You tried the one you liked better first, Harlan. Tell them what you bought with my money."

My father tried to smile.

It was the smile that came before the ask, and it slid off his face.
