Chapter 19: Costly

I didn't tell Anders what his grandmother said to me.

I took him down to the cafeteria and put a bowl of tomato soup in front of him.

He ate half of it.

"Monday," he said, with the spoon in his hand. "The board meets Monday at nine."

"Why does that sound like a funeral?"

"Because I'm going to sign something. And you'll be angry about it."

"What is it?"

"Come to the tower. Sit at the back."

"I don't sit at the back."

"Then sit wherever you like," he said, and nearly smiled.

On Monday the boardroom on the fifty-second floor had the same glass walls and the same long table.

I'd come in my work jacket and my boots, and the secretary showed me to a chair against the wall.

Eight board members sat in the leather chairs, and the vice chairman was among them with his hands folded.

Anders stood at the head of the table with a single sheet of paper in front of him.

"My grandmother's shares," he said, without preamble.

"Thirty-four percent of Engdahl Freight."

"They passed to me on June fourteenth, the day the proxy was filed, by the terms of her trust."
