Chapter 23: The Question He Asks Now
Greta went to sleep in the middle of her own sentence, with her lipstick on.
The nurse tucked the blanket over her and flicked off the lamp.
Anders and I stood in the dim corridor outside the room.
Neither of us had answered her yet.
"She didn't ask us," I said. "She told us."
"She does that."
"Is that a hint?"
"It's a statement of fact," said Anders, and rubbed his eyes. "I'm learning to tell the difference."
He drove me back to the yard in the Volvo with the heater on high.
He parked by the shed and came around to open my door, and I let him.
The lot was empty and black, and the lake beyond the dock was laid out flat under a cold half moon.
Up in the room over the office I turned on the space heater and sat on the cot in my jacket.
Anders stood in the doorway and didn't come in.
"May I ask you something?" he said.
"You've been asking me things for two weeks."
"Not this."
"Then ask."
He took a breath.
