"Because I don't know who would come if they were free to stay home," Caerovan said.
He told it to the crumb on the tiny plate.
Ysmerelle waited.
"I would like to say it's family custom."
"Would that be true?"
"No." He set the plate on his knee. "Thalvian was liked. I wanted to be liked, and I found a faster way."
It was the plainest thing she had ever heard him say, and he had said it without looking at her.
She turned on the bench to see his face.
Virelle chose that moment to come back across the lawn carrying a three-tier pastry stand.
Ysmerelle had ordered it from the baker for the duke's visit.
She had wanted the afternoon to look like a place where a duke was received, even a small one.
Virelle set the stand on the bench between them and left without comment.
It stood as high as Ysmerelle's chin.
Six pastries sat on the bottom tier, three on the middle tier and a single plum tart on top.
She leaned left to find his face.
