Chapter 15: The Freezer
I told Lorne in the truck, with the heater roaring and my hands locked on the wheel.
"She wants him out of that freezer tonight. Lake, nobody looks at the lake. That's the text, Lorne. That's what Rory planned for you."
"Then that's what she's going to do with him."
He had Rory's phone open on his knee.
"Heron Point," he said. "There's a photo of the two of them on a dock, geotagged. It's a boat shed on the north shore."
"We call the sheriff."
"He's in the district attorney's office until six. We'd lose an hour."
My phone lit on the dash.
It was the young deputy from the station, a text from an unknown number.
"I'm off at 6. Heard it all in court. I'll follow you. Don't go in without me."
The boat shed stood on pilings over black water, with a single yellow bulb burning over its door.
A flatbed truck with wide wheels was backed down the launch ramp.
The deputy's pickup slid in beside us with its lights off.
Through the open shed door I saw a big man in a yard jacket cranking a winch.
A chest freezer rode up the ramp on a cradle of chains, dripping frost, bound for the pontoon tied alongside.
I knew the man.
He was the night watchman at Penhallow Boatworks, six feet five.
