Chapter 18: Half the Yard
On Monday morning the boardroom at Penhallow Boatworks smelled of coffee and fresh varnish.
Lorne sat at the head of the long table in a suit that finally almost fit.
I sat at his left, and he did not let go of my hand once.
The board chair's lawyer sat across from a young man in a blue suit.
That was Dina's new attorney, and he looked as if he had not slept since Saturday.
"We're here on a petition," the young man said, "filed by the lawful widow of Rory Penhallow."
"The marriage certificate is valid in the state of Alaska, and under New York law a surviving spouse inherits."
"Ms. Palfrey is entitled to her late husband's half of this company."
Nobody at the table moved.
The chair's lawyer lifted a thick leather binder from his stack.
"We've reviewed the certificate," he said. "It looks genuine, and we won't contest it today."
"We'll contest something older."
