Chapter 21: Plea
Courtroom Two was fuller on Friday than it had been the week before.
The reporter was back, and so were the women from the arts center.
The old foreman had brought half the yard, in their church jackets, and they filled three rows.
Dina came in through the side door in handcuffs and an orange jumpsuit, with a deputy at each elbow.
The judge with the closed-door face looked down at her for a long moment.
"Ms. Palfrey. You have been advised of your rights."
"Yes, Your Honor."
"You wish to plead guilty to all counts in the indictment."
"Yes."
"Unlawful imprisonment in the first degree. Assault in the second degree. Forgery."
"Conspiracy. Criminal possession of a controlled substance. Endangering an incompetent person. Abuse of a corpse."
The judge read it slowly, and every count landed in the room.
Dina answered yes to each one.
Her voice never wavered, and her chin never dipped.
