Chapter 21: No Deal
Carolyn sat propped on three pillows when Chantal came in, with a cup of tea in both hands.
The detective stayed in the corridor.
Chantal's wrists were free, and she held them against her stomach.
Caleb stood by the window.
Nina sat in the corner chair, and she kept her eyes on her phone.
"Close the door," Carolyn said.
Chantal shut it.
"Come closer. I can't see you."
Chantal came to the foot of the bed.
Carolyn looked at her for a long time.
Her face was thin and pale, but her gaze was steady.
"You used to bring me soup," she said.
"Yes."
"Every Sunday for a whole winter. I thought you were the best girl my son could have found."
"Mrs. Merrick."
"I'm talking."
Chantal closed her mouth.
"The woman at the front desk told Bernard that someone paid my bills out of a personal account for two years," Carolyn said.
"A salary account. Same date every month. I asked who it was, and nobody knew. It was you."
"It was."
"Thank you."
Chantal's face crumpled.
"Don't," Carolyn said sharply. "I'm not done."
She set the cup down on the tray with a click.
"Now I'll tell you the rest. You let my son sit in a cell for three years. You let a doctor throw me out of my bed in a gown. You let me die by inches while you wore a ring that wasn't yours."
"I didn't know what Desmond had done to the bills."
"You should have known. You should have looked." Carolyn's voice cracked, and she steadied it.
