Chapter 6: A Hundred Dollars
For a moment nobody at the table moved.
Then Desmond laughed.
It was a warm, easy laugh, and it filled the corner of the room.
"A fake certificate," he said.
"Caleb, listen. It was a joke between two kids. Chantal and I made a silly promise at nineteen, and she printed a form to keep you from feeling left out."
"A joke," Caleb said.
"A harmless little joke. You're a grown man. Surely you won't hold a piece of paper against her."
Caleb looked at him.
The man was good.
Every word had been shaped before he spoke it, and every pause had a smile in it.
"Chantal," Caleb said.
"Is that true?"
She sat with her hands pressed flat against the tablecloth.
"Chantal."
"It wasn't a joke," she said.
Desmond's smile stopped.
"I never meant it as a joke. I forged it because you wanted to marry me, and I was scared to say no."
"Darling," Desmond said.
"Don't," she said, without looking at him.
"You said you loved me," Caleb said.
"I did."
"Then why did you let me sign my life away for a woman who wasn't my wife?"
Her mouth trembled.
The couple at the next table had stopped eating.
"Because I had to," she said.
"Why?"
Desmond put a hand on her arm.
"She has nothing more to say, Caleb. You're embarrassing her."
"I'm embarrassing her?"
Caleb stood.
The chair scraped across the floor.
Heads turned across the restaurant.
"My mother was dragged out of a hospital in a gown this morning," he said.
