The harbor clinic keeps Saturday hours for people who can't take a weekday off for their own knees.

We got there at six, with our hair still full of Dune Street dust.

Gabe held the door for me, and neither of us mentioned that my sweater was inside out.

The waiting room had a dozen people in it.

I knew most of them from church.

They all looked up at once.

"Susie," said a woman with a walker and a rain bonnet. "Hello, dear. How's your father?"

"I'm about to find out."

At the end of the hall, a door stood closed with a paper sign on it.

PHYSICAL THERAPY. DO NOT ENTER. THIS MEANS YOU, BERNIE.

Bernie sat on a plastic chair outside with her purse on her knees.

"He's been in there forty minutes," she said. "The therapist is on her break. She's twenty-six. She cried."

"What did he do?"

"She asked him to do ten steps on the practice stairs."

"And?"

"He said his hip had filed a grievance."

I knocked on the door.
