Chapter 19: The Pier

I found him at the end of the pier at nine that night.

I knew he would be there.

The white van sat in the lot by the lighthouse with its engine ticking.

A single figure stood at the rail in a canvas coat.

The wind came hard off the lake.

Whitecaps broke on the breakwater in long gray lines, and the noise was so loud that I had to shout.

"You left!"

He turned.

His face was red with cold and entirely open.

"I did," he said. "I'm sorry. I should have told you where I was going."

"You didn't leave a note."

"I didn't. I'm telling you now."

"Item five."

"Same day." He nearly smiled. "I took the walk so I wouldn't say something."

"What would you have said?"

"Stay."

The wind took the word and flung it across the water.

I stood very still.

"I won't say it," he said.

"I thought, if I stand there one more minute, my face will say it for me."

"Your face is saying it now."

"I know. It's cold. I can't help it."

I laughed, and the laugh turned into something with a crack in it.

I walked up to him.

"I overruled my father," I said. "In front of everybody."
