Josiah put himself between us before Colt had finished raising his head.
"Mr. Satterfield," he said. "This is a private landing."
"I'm not here for you," Colt said.
His voice was hoarse, and his hat was crushed in his fist, and he had not shaved.
I had never seen him afraid.
"Mar," he said. "We've been calling since Wednesday."
"I turned my phone off."
"I know you did." He held up the manila folder. "I went to the county clerk on Wednesday to pull the license for the wedding."
Haylee, beside him, made a high thin sound through her nose.
"The woman at the counter typed in my name," Colt said. "She looked at the screen, and she said, 'Mr. Satterfield, you're already married.'"
I stood very still with my key in my hand.
"To whom?" Josiah said.
He asked it in his level voice, and I heard it shake once at the very bottom.
