Chapter 13: Mill Road
Nobody in the gallery made a sound.
Reid held the microphone with both hands, and I could hear his breath in the speakers.
"It was June," he said. "I was nineteen. I took my father's car out of the garage without asking."
"Reid," Warren said again, and started down the aisle.
Two of the trustees caught his sleeves.
"I'd been at the house on Fairmount, drinking since four," Reid said. "I told myself I was fine to drive. I looked down at my phone for one second on Mill Road."
He turned his battered face to me.
"You were walking home from your shift in a gray hoodie. I never saw you until the car was already on you."
My hands had started to shake, and I pressed them flat against my skirt.
"I stopped. I got out. You were in the road and your leg was wrong, and I called 911 and held your hand until they came."
"You told them you found me," I said.
It came out quiet, but the room was so still that it carried.
"I told them that," Reid said. "My father got there before the ambulance left. A man from his office was with him. By morning the report said an unidentified vehicle."
"And you let it say that."
"For a year." His voice broke. "Then I met you, and I let it stand for two more."
I walked down the aisle.
I didn't decide to. My leg was just moving, one step and then the next, past the jury and the professors and the dean with his mouth open.
Reid saw me coming and lowered the microphone.
