Chapter 8: Dinner at the Club

The Corwin Club was on the top floor of the old bank building, with white tablecloths and a view of the whole town.

Warren Garrity stood when I came in and pulled out my chair himself.

I had brought Nell as my witness.

I had also brought my phone, recording, in the inside pocket of my jacket.

"I'm grateful you came," Warren said. "Please order anything. I'd like this to be a pleasant evening."

"I'd like it to be a short one," I said.

He laughed.

A waiter filled our glasses.

Warren folded his hands on the tablecloth.

"The suspension has been lifted. I made the call this morning. Your Fellowship is restored in full, and the first year's stipend will be paid on the first of July."

"And the conduct review?"

"Never happened. A clerical mistake, as I said."

Nell put down her fork.

"Is Reid in jail?" she asked.

"Reid is in a clinic. He agreed to go voluntarily." Warren's voice softened. "I'm his father, and I'm sorry for what he did. I'm here to ask you to let a sick young man get well. If you withdrew your complaint, it would be a great kindness."

So that was what the dinner was for.

I had known that since the lobby.

"The police have photographs of five faces," I said. "Reid's brothers. Paige. They have a group chat. This isn't mine to withdraw."

"A complaint can always be softened."

"Is that what you told the dean?"

His smile held steady.

"I told the dean that my son had made a mistake and that I'd stand behind the school's decision, whatever it was."

"The chat says you talked to the dean three days before it happened."
