Chapter 23: The Gate

I was at the gate by eight, and the release was not until ten.

I had not slept.

I parked the Subaru in the visitors' lot across the road from the county facility, with the windows down.

I watched the morning come up over a chain-link fence and a strip of gray razor wire.

It was the eleventh of April.

The sky was high and clean, and the air had a green smell to it.

I had brought a thermos of coffee, and I did not drink it.

I had put on the blue dress I had bought for Niko's cousin's wedding two years ago and never worn.

I had put on my good boots and left my hair down.

It was the first time in my adult life I had gone to meet a man with my hair down.

At a quarter to ten, a small steel door opened in the side of the wall.

It was the kind a delivery goes through.

A guard stood in it.

Then a man came out into the light.

He wore the gray suit from the courtroom, the one Marguerite had brought from Eastern Avenue, and a white shirt.

He carried a clear plastic bag with a few papers in it and a pair of reading glasses I had never seen.

He stood on the concrete step and put up one hand against the sun.

I got out of the car.

I did not run.

I walked across the road and stopped ten feet from him, on the cracked asphalt.

He lowered his hand.

He looked at me, and his face did something I had no name for.

All the years went out of it at once.

"Fay," Kostas said.

"Hi," I said.

It was a stupid word, and it was the only one I had.

He came down the step.

He crossed the ten feet slowly, in daylight, with no guard and no glass and no strap on his ankle, and he stopped in front of me.
