Chapter 7: Resignation

I wrote the letter on Saturday night at my kitchen table, in longhand, and I took it to the court myself.

It said that Dr. Fay Hennessy withdrew as evaluator in the matter of Konstantinos Drakos.

The reason was a prior personal relationship with a member of the defendant's family.

I wrote that I had not disclosed it at the intake because I had not known the identity of the defendant when the court assigned me the file.

That was true.

I wrote that I had filed no opinion on competency and would file none.

That was also true.

I did not write what had happened behind the fogged glass.

I signed it with my full name and did not read it over, because if I read it I would tear it up.

On Monday morning I walked it down the long marble corridor of the circuit courthouse to the clerk's window.

I put it in her hand.

She read it and looked at me over her glasses.
