Chapter 17: Two Doors
I called my boss from the hotel bathroom with the water running.
She cried. I didn't.
"I'm seventy-one, honey," she said. "My knees are done. The roof is done. The Ohio people have money and a lawyer."
"What will they do with the rooms?"
She was quiet too long.
"They have their own rooms," she said. "Same six in every city. They'll strip ours out."
The Locksmith's Daughter. My dad's workbench. Gone into a dumpster by June.
I turned off the water and went back out.
Pierson was sitting on the bed with his hands between his knees, not listening on purpose.
"Don't," I said.
"I didn't say anything."
"You were thinking about buying it."
"I was thinking about it," he said. "I wasn't going to do it. I was going to wait until you asked. And you're not going to ask."
"No."
"Then I'll stop thinking about it."
He didn't. I could see him not stopping. But he kept his mouth shut.
Sunday dinner at our house is at five, because Mom works Sunday nights.
I told Pierson he didn't have to come.
