I didn't take the envelope from him.

I made him hold it while I read.

The agreement was two pages.

I would state, publicly, that the Nautilus had been a joint project with Winston Wardell.

I would state that the plate in stage seven was "a personal gesture added after the fact."

I would state that I had no knowledge of the history of the Pinwheel lock.

I would never discuss any of it again, with anyone, for the rest of my life.

"And in return?" I asked.

"Two hundred and fifty thousand dollars," the dean said. "More than your mother earns in five years. I checked."

"You checked my mother."

"I check everything." He smiled. "And there's a second consideration. Page two."

I turned the page.

Upon signature, Clifford Wardell would withdraw his lawsuit against Pierson Wardell and Deadbolt.

I looked up.

"You're suing your brother," I said, "and you want me to buy him out of it."

"I want you to be practical," he said. "You can save his company with a signature. Isn't that what you people do for each other?"
