Chapter 23: Ohio, For Real
His father's garage smelled of motor oil, sawdust and forty years of dust that nobody had ever let a broom touch.
The drum kit sat against the back wall under a plastic tarp, exactly where a nineteen-year-old had left it.
"There she is," his father said, pulling off the tarp with a flourish.
The snare was dented, the bass drum had a sticker of a cartoon dog, and one cymbal had a crack in it shaped like Ohio.
I laughed before I could stop myself.
"Don't," Ashton said.
"The cymbal's shaped like Ohio."
"It's a coincidence."
"It's been there since he was fourteen," his father said. "He hit it too hard."
"Dad."
"He hit everything too hard.
"We called it a talent."
Dinner had been pot roast and green beans.
There was also a pie his mother called "nothing," and it was the best thing I had eaten in a year.
Nobody had mentioned Rex, the broadcast, the millions.
His mother had hugged me at the door for a very long time.
Then she held me at arm's length and said, "You're thinner than the photographs."
"Mom."
"I'm just saying she's thinner."
She had sat me beside her at the table.
She told me which of her son's ears he had pierced himself at sixteen, and she passed me the biggest slice.
