Chapter 15: Not My Son
Two men in dark suits came up the courthouse steps and stopped in front of my mother.
"Maureen Thornbury?" one said. "The district attorney's office would like a word."
"I'm not going anywhere with you," she said.
"Ma'am, you just said it on live television."
Dalton's mother took a quick step back from her.
She turned to find her son pushing up through the crowd.
"Dalton," she said. "Dalton, go home. Don't say a word to anyone."
He did not go home.
He stopped one step below her, with his coat dragging on the stone.
"Whose bodies were they?" he said.
"Not here."
"Two people were carried out of that hospital under sheets. You signed for me." His voice cracked. "Who did you sign for?"
Every microphone on the steps swung toward him.
"They were nobody's," his mother hissed. "Two people nobody was going to claim. I did it to keep you out of a scandal."
"A scandal."
"You were going to be ruined! That girl put out a video of you in a bed with your wife's sister."
"I never saw that video on the internet until I was already in Pittsburgh," Dalton said. "It was Cora who posted it, wasn't it?"
His mother did not answer.
Behind me, a woman with a notebook whispered, "Oh my God."
"She posted it herself," Dalton said slowly. "So she could die."
"Dalton."
"She wanted out of the house, and she wanted me, and she wanted Hallie to take the blame." He laughed, a terrible sound. "And you helped her. You put two strangers in the ground so I would never have to ask."
