Chapter 8: Room 412
Cora walked to the foot of the stage with her phone held high.
Her belly led the way, and every camera followed it.
"Seven years ago," she said, "my sister did something she has never been punished for."
"Cora," I said. "Be careful."
"I'm done being careful."
She handed the phone to a man at the sound desk.
He looked at me, and I nodded.
I had nothing to hide.
The screen filled with a hotel corridor, shot from the far end, with gold carpet and a row of numbered doors.
A young woman in a blue dress came into the frame, with a man's arm hung over her shoulders.
The man could barely hold his head up.
It was Dalton.
The woman was me.
I was twenty-two, with my hair pinned up for a party and a nametag still clipped to my dress.
On the screen, I dragged him along the wall and fumbled a key card at room 412.
The door opened, and I pulled him inside.
The picture cut off.
The hall made a noise.
"There it is," my mother said in a high, hurt voice. "She took that boy into a room when he could barely walk."
"She drugged him first," Dalton's mother said. "We all know it."
I looked out at the hall.
I had waited seven years for someone to ask me what happened in that corridor, and nobody ever had.
"I'll tell you what happened," I said.
"Hal," Dalton started.
"Be quiet, Dalton."
It came out so level that he actually closed his mouth.
"It was a hotel charity dinner," I said. "I was working the check-in table for my office. At eleven-thirty I went to find a bathroom, and I found Dalton by the elevators, leaning on the wall."
