Chapter 5: Table Nine

Caelen stood in his hallway and watched me scroll Kelsey's feed for the third time.

"She cut it," he said.

"She cut it."

"Which means she knew there was something in it worth cutting."

"Which means you believe me?"

"Which means she's careful." He took the phone out of my hand and handed it back to me screen-down. "Go to bed, Ms. Lowell. You're no good to me tired."

"Sadie."

"What?"

"Nobody calls me Ms. Lowell. That's my mother."

He looked at me for a second.

"Go to bed, Sadie."

I didn't sleep.

I lay in the slanted room listening to the radiator clank and thought about two hundred guests.

Two hundred people at a wedding in Santa Monica.

Two hundred phones.

At seven in the morning I sat up, pulled my hair into a knot and opened my own account.

Eleven hundred followers. Mostly college friends and a few lenders.

Overnight it had gone to forty thousand.

Every one of them had found me through the cake.

My messages were a swamp.

Cake bride. Pathetic. Imagine. Did you really not know.

I took a picture of my wedding dress, still in its garment bag on the back of the bathroom door, with a smear of dried frosting on the shoulder.

Then I wrote the caption, deleted it twice, and wrote it a third time.

Hi. I'm the cake bride.

Yes, I really didn't know. Yes, he really did that. No, I'm not okay, but I'm working on it.

If you were a guest on Saturday and filmed anything at the license table between four and four-thirty, please send it to me.

I'll buy you the best cake in Boston. I promise not to throw it at anybody.

I posted it before I could change my mind.

Then I took the train to State Street.

Caelen's team sat in a glass room at the end of the eleventh floor.

Four analysts. Four faces that went very flat when I walked in.
