Chapter 7: The Devoted Man
"I'll call security," my mother said.
"No," I said.
She turned and stared at me.
"If security drags him out, the camera gets a heartbroken man being thrown into the street by the bride's rich mother." I pressed the elevator button. "That's the show he came to make."
"And if you go down there?"
"Then they get a different show."
Caelen came out of the glass room pulling on his jacket.
"Where are you going?"
"Lobby. Spencer's here with roses and a camera."
He stepped into the elevator beside me without asking.
"I'm not going to hit him," he said, when the doors closed.
"I didn't think you would."
"I'm just saying. In case you were hoping."
I laughed, and the elevator dinged, and the doors opened on Spencer Treadwell.
He saw me and his whole face went soft.
It was a beautiful face, when it went soft.
That was the trouble with it.
"Sadie," he said. "Sweetheart."
Half the building had come down to watch.
Analysts on the stairs. Assistants by the coffee cart. Two security guards, looking at each other.
The red light on the camera was on.
Spencer walked toward me with the roses and went down on one knee on my great-grandfather's marble.
He held up a small velvet box.
The same ring.
He'd had it cleaned.
"I know I hurt you," he said, loud enough for the boom mic. "It was a stupid joke, and it went too far. But you know how I feel about you. Everybody in L.A. knows how I feel about you."
The woman with the clipboard pressed her hand to her heart.
"You got scared and ran," he said. "That's okay. That's what cold feet are. Come home, Sadie. Let me make it right."
