Chapter 15: The Sitting
"I exist," I said. "I was standing in his shed."
"I know," Harker said. "Now you have to prove it to people who weren't."
Tobias put his hand on the small of my back.
He didn't take it away.
On Friday morning the Great Hall at Sterling Hall was full to the walls.
Every shipping House on the coast had sent someone. Some had sent everyone.
The Harbor Authority men were there. So was the server from the Blue Room, carrying water at the side of the room.
The Crown arbitrator sat at the head of the long table in a plain dark suit.
He was sixty-seven, white-haired, and he didn't look up from his papers for anybody.
My family sat on the left.
Dad. Mom, with a line of stitches on her lip. Asher, Fletcher, Hudson, Colton.
Declan with his arm in a cast to the shoulder.
Landon in a wheelchair, gray in the face, who had signed himself out of St. Brendan's that morning against orders.
I sat at the end of their row in Vanguard grey.
Tobias stood at the wall behind me. Three feet.
The Fitzgerald side was on the right.
