Chapter 21: I Drove Her
A chair scraped at table four.
My brother stood up in a rented tuxedo with his napkin still in his hand.
"I drove her," Brody said.
Three hundred heads turned.
"Brody, sit down," my mother said.
His voice shook, but it carried.
"Everything Nell just said is true, because I'm the one who did it. I was the driver. I have never said that out loud to anyone who could do something about it."
He turned to the tables around him.
"That baby is the little girl on every Christmas card we ever sent you."
"He's drunk," my mother said to the room. "Please, everyone, he is not well."
"I haven't had a drink in twelve days." Brody looked straight at her. "I'd like you to hear me say it sober, Mom, because I didn't say it any of the other times."
She opened her mouth.
At the back of the ballroom, the double doors swung wide.
An old man in a brown suit stood in them with a white-haired woman on his arm.
He held a cardboard box with yellowed tape against his chest.
I heard my mother's breath catch.
"Good evening," the doctor said. "I was the physician at Hartwell Women's Clinic. I delivered Nell Ostrander's daughter on the ninth of March."
He walked down the center aisle between the tables, and every head turned to follow him.
"I was paid to lie, and I lied." His wife kept her hand on his arm. "The real chart is in this box. I would like to swear to it again to anyone who will listen, and I'd like my license taken for it."
