My Family Sold Me for Their Favourite Daughter novel · Chapter 1 of 24
Chapter 1: The Name on the Megaphone
Willa is freed in a federal raid, learns the family she mourned is alive and waiting behind the tape, and goes with them. In the car Callie whispers that one word to the agent will have her put away.
The agent read my name into a megaphone while forty cameras watched me walk out of the warehouse.
"Willa Lowry, thirty-one, recovered alive."
I had not heard anyone say my name in seven years.
The man who held me had called me Ledger.
Someone put a foil blanket around my shoulders, and it crackled every time I breathed.
Thirteen other women walked out behind me, and every one of them stopped at the doorway and looked at the sky.
I looked at it too.
A medic sat me on the back step of an ambulance and took my pulse.
He frowned at the number and took it again.
Then he read something off his tablet in a low voice.
"Your field labs came back, ma'am. Your kidneys are working at eighteen percent. You need a specialist this week."
I took hold of his sleeve. "Don't write that where my family can read it."
He glanced past me, toward the yellow tape across the lot. "Your family is already here. They've been waiting since the news broke."
I laughed, and it came out cracked.
"My family is dead," I said.
In my second year, Eldon Dray had slid a newspaper clipping under my door.
It was an obituary for a house fire in Shaker Heights, with three photographs.
My mother, my sister and my husband.
I had read it until the paper split along the folds.
A tall man with a federal badge on his belt crouched in front of me.
He had grey at his temples and a crooked nose, and his eyes were red from a week without sleep.
"Ms. Lowry, I'm Special Agent Finnegan Fiske. Before anyone else gets to you, I need to ask one thing."
"Ask."
"Dray ran everything through shell accounts. Did he ever name a client, anyone who paid him for you?"
I thought about the seven years of books I had kept in his back office.
"He never said a name," I said. "But one payment came on the first of every month, from an account marked LL."
"Every month?"
"It never missed once. Not one time in seven years."
He wrote LL on his palm because his notebook was in a truck somewhere.
Then he slipped a card into the fold of my blanket and closed my fingers over it.
"Call me anytime," he said. "I mean it."
"Willa."
The voice came from behind him.
I knew it before I turned.
My mother stood at the tape with an officer's hand on her elbow, letting her through.
Loretta Lowry, sixty-one, in a cream cardigan and the pearl earrings my father had given her.
Beside her was Benton in a grey suit, with his hair combed.
Beside him was my sister Callie, in a camel coat, with her blonde hair pinned up neatly.
Nobody in front of me had a mark on them.
There was no smoke on any of them, no burn, nothing.
Callie ran and threw her arms around my neck, and her gold bracelet cut into my shoulder.
"Oh, Willa," she sobbed. "Oh, thank God."
Cameras swung toward us all at once.
My mother put her palm against my cheek.
"We looked for you every single day, darling," she said. "Every single day."
Benton touched my hair and left his hand there.
"You're home, Willa," he said. "It's over now."
My mother turned to the agent with her wet eyes bright and steady.
"She's exhausted. Thank you for everything you've done. We'll take her from here."
He did not move.
"Ms. Lowry has a statement to give," he said. "And she needs a medical exam."
"She'll have the best doctors in Ohio," Benton said. "Tomorrow, when she's rested. I'm her husband, and I'm also her lawyer."
The agent looked at me.
I could have stood up and pointed at the three of them on live television.
I had no proof, no passport and no shoes, and I could not have walked to the end of the lot.
I could say it all tonight and be dismissed as a confused woman in a foil blanket.
Or I could go with them and learn how much they would say when they thought I was grateful.
So I got up and took Callie's arm.
The agent said my name once, quietly, behind me.
I did not turn around.
Benton opened the door of a black car and handed me in.
Callie climbed in on the other side and laced her fingers through mine.
The cameras flashed against the glass as we pulled out of the lot.
She smiled and waved at them through the window.
Her voice stayed very low.
"If you say one word to that agent, Mom will have you put away."
Then she squeezed my hand until it hurt.
"I'm so glad you're home," she said.
