Chapter 23: Surgery Week

The donor was waiting in my room when I came back from my last dialysis.

She sat on the visitor's chair with her coat on her lap and her hands folded, and she stood up when the door opened.

I knew her at once.

She had been in the fourth cell, five doors down from mine, and she had been one of the thirteen who stopped in the doorway and looked at the sky.

"You don't remember me," she said.

"I remember your voice. You sang at night."

"Badly." She smiled, and one of her front teeth was a false one. "I'm told you arranged for me to be alive."

"I don't know what you mean."

"The doctor told me your kidneys were failing, and I said I'd give you one. She asked if I was sure, and I said I owed you more than that." She stepped closer. "You kept his books."

"I did."

"In the second year I had a fever for four days, and Dray was going to move me to the other house. The men there didn't send anyone back."

I did not say anything.

"You wrote that I was sick for three weeks," she said. "Nobody could be moved while they were sick. I read your pages upside down when he left them on the desk."

"The numbers were easy to bend."

"You bent them for nine of us." She had tears on her face, and she did not wipe them. "Not one of the nine went to that house."

I sat down on the bed because my legs had given up.

For seven years I had thought of the books as the thing he made me do.
