Chapter 7: Visitors

The nurse came for me after lunch with her glasses pushed up in her hair.

"You have a visitor," she said. "I wrote your request in the chart, and the unit physician signed it. He's allowed a professional visit."

"Who?"

"He showed a badge. I didn't ask him to spell it."

Finnegan Fiske stood up when I came into the visiting room.

He had shaved, and the grey at his temples looked whiter under the fluorescent light.

On the table in front of him lay a phone with a video paused on it.

I recognised the green robe.

"Your neighbour sent this to the tip line at five this morning," he said. "Then she called the number on the screen. Over four hundred thousand people have watched it since."

"Is that good?"

"It's why I'm in this room instead of the lobby." He sat down. "The hospital's lawyer wanted to keep me out. Your husband has told them I'm a hostile party."

"My husband has your card in his breast pocket."

"I've got another one." He slid a second card across the table.

I did not pick it up.

"The staff go through my things," I said.

"Then memorize the number."

I read it twice, and he took the card back.

"I'm sorry it took us three days to reach you," he said. "We cleared the office first, for the books, and the cells after. You were in the ninth."

I noted the sentence and set it aside.

"I was in the ninth cell for four years," I said. "Another three before that in other buildings. You didn't know."

"We didn't know. I'm sorry."

He said it flatly, without asking me to answer.

"There's a hearing tomorrow at nine," he said. "A probable-cause hearing, to decide whether the hold stands. Your family's lawyer is Benton. He'll be on one side of the room and he'll be lying on the other."
