Chapter 9: If You Say Them I Die

Tilda's POV

I woke to a cold bed and a voice in the hall that I knew better than my own.

It was Corwin's, and it was perfectly calm, and that frightened me more than shouting would have.

I pulled on his sweater and went down.

Half the lodge was awake.

Wolves stood on the stairs in nightclothes and coats, and every one of them was looking at the great hall.

I pushed through them.

My husband stood in the middle of the floor with a small leather cuff in his right hand.

A length of rusted chain trailed from it across the boards.

My mother stood facing him, with Beatrix beside her.

Alaric sat on the edge of the long table, grey and rigid, with his hands pressed between his knees.

"There she is," Beatrix said brightly. "Tilly, thank goodness. Your husband broke into our cellar at midnight and he's saying the most terrible things."

Corwin turned his head.

He looked at me, and I saw what was in his face, and my knees went weak.

"Tilda," he said. "I need you to look at this and tell me what it is."

He held out the cuff.

I knew it before I touched it.

The leather was the color of old tea.

The buckle had a bent tongue, because I had bent it myself at thirteen, with my teeth.

I took it, and my fingers closed around it, and I could hear my own pulse.

"It's mine," I said.

My voice sounded very small.

"It goes around my left wrist. There's a ring in the wall."
