Chapter 4: Nonna's Rule

Nonna Pia receives people in her study at seven in the morning, before the house is awake.

I knocked on Wednesday with two coffees and the Friday deadline in my pocket.

"Come in, Nico," she said. "You smell like the walk-in cooler."

She sat behind the oak desk with the Date Book in front of her, closed, with her hand flat on the cover.

I put a coffee at her elbow.

"I need your blessing in that book," I said. "In writing, by Friday. Gemma's father won't walk her down the aisle without it."

"Mm." She tasted the coffee. "The Ferrante girl."

"Yes."

"The one who is engaged to your brother."

"She's ending that."

"I heard. The whole house heard." Her mouth moved, almost a smile. "Your aunt dropped a tray."

I waited.

Nonna turned the book toward me and opened it to the page for March.

There were two lines under the fourteenth.

*Renzo Tessaro and Gemma Ferrante.*

Nothing else.

"I can't cross it out," Nonna said. "It was filed first. The rule is the rule, and I have never made one exception for a grandson, not even you."

"Then I lose."

"I didn't say that."

She took off her glasses and set them on the blotter.

"The book doesn't marry anyone, Nico. It records a date and a bride, and the celebration goes to the Tessaro the bride walks to. My husband's great-aunt wrote that rule after her sister was left at an altar. It has never been tested, because every bride in a hundred years walked straight to the groom in the book."

I stared at her.

"Say that again."

"The date is Renzo's," she said. "The bride is her own."
