Chapter 23: The Board

The whole room heard him say it.

Two hundred people, and the band, and the waiters holding their trays still.

Damon's board chair stood three steps behind him with the police report in her hand.

I didn't step back.

"I did this?" I said.

"You walked out. And everything went with you." His voice cracked on the last word. "My company. My deal. My wedding."

"Your wedding just ran out the door with her shoes in her hand."

Somebody near the champagne tower laughed, and turned it into a cough.

Damon didn't hear it. He was looking only at me.

"You could have told me. One phone call."

"I did tell you. Eighteen times. In a dress."

The board chair moved up beside him. She was a small woman with silver hair and a voice that didn't need a microphone.

"Ms. Penhurst. You're saying Mr. Kessington knew nothing about her?"

"I'm saying he never asked."

I turned so the board could see my face.

They were standing in a cluster by the window, in good suits, with forty floors of city lights behind them.
