Chapter 30: The Premiere
I wore the dark green dress.
Arlo wore the bait-shop owner's wedding suit again.
The old man had let out the sleeves for him over the winter, so the scar didn't show this time.
"You could've left them short," I said.
"I'm a partner now. Partners cover their wrists."
Marigold wore a dress for the first time anyone could remember. Purple. With her rain boots.
"It's a premiere," Arlo told her. "Real shoes."
"These are real. I bought them with real money."
The premiere was at the old Palace Cinema downtown, closed for two years until Saffron rented it.
THE TIDEWATER, it said, in red letters. TONIGHT.
There was a red carpet. It was shorter than the ones I used to walk her down.
She didn't need me to hold her hand on it this time.
She walked it alone, in a plain black dress, and stopped for every camera.
Then she came back down the carpet and held out her hand to me anyway.
"Second-grade rules," she said. "You sit with me."
Our seats were in the front row. There was a card taped to mine with my name written on it in red lipstick.
