Chapter 19: Rule One

He came to Den Four at ten, with his left arm in a clean bandage and his hair still wet.

I opened the door and did not move out of it.

"Rule one," I said. "You don't touch me until I tell you to."

His eyes went gold at the rims.

"That's Rule nine," he said. "That's my rule."

"It was never yours. It was in the founders' hand, and you only had the page." I took him by the shirt and pulled him over the threshold. "Now it's mine."

I shut the door with my heel.

Lottie's boots were gone from the hook, and the house was dark and warm and smelled of wood smoke.

I led him down the hall to my room by the front of his shirt.

At the foot of my bed I stopped and looked at him.

He stood with his hands open at his sides, and a muscle jumped in his jaw.

"I'm allowed to look," he said hoarsely. "Rule one says nothing about looking."

"You can look."

I unbuttoned his shirt slowly, one button at a time, and he watched my fingers.

I pushed it off his shoulders, past the bandage, and I laid my mouth on his collarbone.

He shuddered all the way down.

"Autumn."

"Not yet."

I took my time.

I put my lips on the long scar down his ribs, and on the new ones from tonight that had already closed to pink lines.

I felt his stomach pull in under my hand, and I heard his breath start to catch.

I undid his belt.

I sat him down on the edge of my bed, and I knelt on the rug between his knees.

He looked down at me.

His expression broke.

"You don't have to," he said, and his voice cracked. "You don't have to kneel to me."
