"The tags are dated last week," I said.
Evander stood in the open door of the closet with a glass of water in each hand.
He had taken off his coat. His shirt was black, with the sleeves pushed to the elbow.
"I know," he said.
"You bought me a wardrobe a week ago."
"I ordered it in November. It arrived last week."
"Before the ceremony."
"Yes."
"Before I stood in front of the whole pack and nothing happened." I turned around. "Why would you buy clothes for a girl you'd never spoken to?"
"I thought you might need somewhere to go."
"You thought that in January."
"I thought it every day since September."
The room went quiet.
I did not know what to do with that, so I did the stubborn thing and kept going.
"You said you only knew what I was from my scent. That doesn't explain a wardrobe."
"No," he agreed. "It doesn't."
"So explain it."
"I can't tonight."
He held out one of the glasses.
I took it, because it was either that or hit him with it.
"You watched me for months," I said. "You never said a word."
"You never said a word to me, either."
That was fair, and I hated that it was fair.
"I'm not going to let you hold things back," I said, and I gripped the glass harder. "You can't keep all of it to yourself. I have a deadline. I have twenty-eight days and a pack that wants me gone, and I need to know what you want, because nobody does anything for..."
The glass broke in my hand.
