Chapter 7: She Sleeps in My Bed

"He told me to ask you what your father has been buying," I said.

We stood in the corridor outside the cafeteria, with students flowing around us on both sides.

Evander's face did not change.

"My father buys many things," he said. "Land. Treaties. Silence."

"That isn't an answer."

"It's the one I have tonight."

"Gavin was scared out of his mind. He wouldn't say it with your friend standing outside the glass."

"My friend was there because the Alpha's son asked a girl in my protection to meet him alone." His voice was very even. "I would do it again."

"I'm not your property."

"No," he said. "You aren't."

He said it so quickly and so plainly that I forgot the rest of my argument.

He picked up my bag from the floor where I had dropped it, and handed it to me.

"Come to the manor tonight. The court meets at nine. You'll be seen with me, and you'll be seen to be mine." He hesitated. "I'll answer what I can afterward."

"What you can."

"Yes."

I should have refused.

Instead I went upstairs after class and found a dress laid out on the bed, deep green, the one from the shop window.

I put it on.

I told myself it was because a mate would.

The great hall was lit with a hundred candles.

Vampires filled it, in black and silver and deep red, standing in loose circles with glasses in their hands.

They were all pale, all beautiful, and every one of them turned to look at me when I walked in.

Evander waited at the bottom of the stairs.

He looked at the dress, and then he looked at my face.

A muscle moved in his jaw.

"You came," he said.

"You said you'd answer afterward."
